Post-lingually deafened children

These are children who have become deafened after acquiring some language development. This group can receive benefit in the following ways:

• help maintain and improve speech and language skills

• control of voice in loudness and normal variability, pitch levels, and inflection

• aid in speechreading

• recognition of environmental sounds

We have not had sufficient feedback on this group as to whether the Tactaid 7 or the Tactilator is the preferred device. Our suggestion is that if the child needs a lot of improvement in speech production, that the Tactaid 7 is preferable. However, a child with well developed pronunciation can do very well with the Tactilator (LTD). In this case, the relative costs of the units may be the deciding factor.

Whichever unit is chosen, a training program integrated into the child's schooling is important. An abundance of training material exists, either from Audiological Engineering or from other sources listed in our section on Training & Resources. If you need assistance with training, please refer to this section.
